Packed Bed Wet Scrubber

Packed Bed Wet Scrubbers are designed to effectively remove acids, soluble gases, chemicals, fumes, and odors from contaminated air. These scrubbers use a specially engineered packing media, optimized for each specific application, through which the polluted air flows. As the air passes through, it is exposed to a recirculated liquid that wets the packing media. This liquid solvent absorbs the gas pollutants, effectively neutralizing them.

To prevent the buildup and precipitation of contaminants, a blowdown process continuously discharges a portion of the recirculated liquid, which is replaced with fresh water. This ensures that the scrubber maintains high efficiency in removing pollutants and prolongs the system’s operational lifespan. Packed Bed Wet Scrubbers are highly effective solutions for industrial applications where the removal of harmful gases and odors is crucial.

Working Details:-

A packed bed scrubber enhances the contact area between the liquid and the exhaust gas, enabling efficient purification of the exhaust. This is achieved through specially designed internal components that maximize the interaction between the phases. The packing material used in these scrubbers is typically made of special hollow thermoplastics, which are highly effective in removing soluble gases such as HCl, Cl₂, Br₂, NH₃, SO₂, H₂S, and NOx.

The scrubber’s efficiency is largely determined by the interfacial area between the liquid and gas and the turbulence at this interface, which facilitates the absorption of contaminants. Key design parameters for a packed bed scrubber include gas and liquid flow rates and the required concentration reduction. These factors are carefully considered to optimize the scrubber’s performance for each specific application, ensuring maximum removal of pollutants and maintaining high operational efficiency.

Vertical packed bed scrubbers consist of a vertical vessel filled with packing material, a liquid spray system at the top, and a mist eliminator at the outlet. Polluted gas enters from the bottom and contacts the liquid, allowing for pollutant removal.
